Five Governors Accused of N7 trillion Embezzlement from Derivation Fund

Five state governors have been accused by oil producing communities for embezzling N7.282 trillion.

The communities alleged that for the past 13 years the Governors of Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Edo, Bayelsa, and Ondo received the amount as payments for the 13 per cent derivation.

In a joint letter to the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the communities called on the agency to come to their aid and stop the criminal and undemocratic payment of 13 per cent derivation into any state government account.

They maintained that, “The illegal and unconstitutional payment of 13 per cent derivation fund through the state governments have left the actual oil and gas producing communities in abject poverty.

“The state governments which received this money illegally use the fund to develop their state capitals and non oil and gas producing communities, leaving the actual oil and gas producing communities in hunger and penury.

The development has permitted massive embezzlement and misappropriation of funds meant for oil and gas producing communities.

The communities said, “Therefore appeal to NEITI to intervene and prevail on the RMAFC to respect the constitution, stop this illegal and unconstitutional payment of 13 per cent Derivation Fund into any state government account.

Comply with the principle of fiscal responsibility, transparency, accountability, and pay the 13 per cent Derivation Fund directly to oil and gas communities through a National Derivation Board”

They asked NEITI to come to their various communities and see the level of poverty, pollution, lack of infrastructure, health hazard they are experiencing, adding that there is need for serious auditing on the funds.

    Great to see they have finally seen the light, than continually waste their time and energy accusing the Northern leaders. Good one people!
