Rice Production Efforts In 10 States To Be Bolstered By Federal Government

In a bid to ensure that Nigeria becomes more proactive and strategic in the production of its rice, the Federal Government has announced new efforts of engaging some of the states by partnership in enhancing the growth of the agricultural sector.

Rice has always been in great demand globally. It is one of the heavily imported products into the country that has cost the government millions of dollars owing to a decline in the production of local rice.

But with an era of a dynamic Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Nigeria looks determined and focused on attaining massive production of local rice that should serve as a strong alternative for consumption, which will aid the reduction in its importation expenses.

With the setting up of the special intervention programme for the production of rice in the country, the nation has once again rediscovered its huge potential in the agricultural sector.

The programme which is designed to encourage the production in about 10 states, will go a long way in revolutionizing the agricultural sector in the country, positioning it as an emerging key player in the global industry.

Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina said Nigeria will not rest until it fully achieves self-sufficiency in the production of rice.

The States for the project include Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Kogi, Katsina, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa,Sokoto, which Dr Adesina said were chosen because of their dry season experience and the superb irrigation.
