SON sets New Framework for LPG Imports

As the Federal Government commences policy review on importation of goods into the country, the nation’s certification bearer, the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has announced that it will  scrutinize the process of  the importation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Cylinders (LPG) to maintain efficiency.

By this decision the SON will ensure that all importers of LPG will go through an orientation programme with trained personnel on how to maintain and keep track of LPG cylinders.

The Standard Organization of Organization will also adopt operational guidelines for ensuring that products imported into the country have an effective validation  mechanism, which  means a re-qualification of all imported LPG cylinders.

This new strategy is to be  managed and coordinated by a technical committee that will consist members from key sectors of the economy to give a broad-based perspective for quality compliance.

The Director General of the Standards Organization of Nigeria Professor Joseph Odomodu disclosed this at the second Nigeria Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association conference held in Lagos.

He stated that the agency will commit the importers of the LPGs to taking responsibility for the re-qualification of imported cylinders, which would curtail any discrepancy on their part.

Odomodu said  “The framework should be approved by the stakeholders for implementation”, which he believes will promote healthy competition and encourage creativity and improved safety standards for the millions of Nigerians that use LPGs.

He further stated “It will be appreciated if a positive decision is taken on this proposal and be included in the communiqué to be passed after this conference”.With this policy plan in view it is expected that stakeholders in this sector will cooperate with the regulatory body to achieve this objective.
