Manufacturers Call for Increased Public-Private Sector Partnership
The umbrella body for Manufacturers in the country the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has urged the Public and Private sector to make more collaborative efforts in ensuring that the sector which used to be viable in the 80’s and 90’s but now in decline, can experience a boost and revival.
The President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) made this statement at the annual general meeting of the Abia/Imo branch of the body in Aba, recently bringing into retrospect how such partnerships in the past yielded positive results for the sector.
Economic experts, Public Policy analysts, and Industry Officials in Nigeria have overtime decried the deterioration of the Manufacturing sector which is the pivot for any economy .
In the United States of America, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Germany, Sweden and Norway the Manufacturing sectors have been instrumental to economic growth and development because of an effective Public-Private sector partnership.
Mr Jamodu joined the clamour for the diversification of the Nigerian economy by emphasizing that greater expectations about growing the economy would become achievable through a diversified manufacturing sector.
He revealed that the woes of manufacturing worsened as policy inconsistencies, unregulated importation of goods and multiple taxes persisted in the country.
Mr Jamodu said “Inadequate access to finance, weak consumer demand, waning small and medium scale industrial concerns and general decay in Infrastructure resulted in abysmal capacity utilization and outright extinction of some manufacturing companies”.
He further stated that “Our Country will not meet its Millenium Development Goals if she does not invigorate manufacturing”. And this will invariably dampen Nigeria’s goal of becoming a key player in the global economy by 20:20.
