Opposition, Civil Groups Chide Jonathan on N5 trillion Loot

The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and Civil rights groups on Monday poked President Goodluck Jonathan over the rising level of corruption in his administration

The groups comprising the Voters Assembly and Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders made this move while reacting to the story circulating in the media that N5tn had been stolen from government treasury from the time when Jonathan took over office on May 6, 2010 to date.

The President of Voters Assembly former Chairman of Transition Monitoring Group, Mr. Moshood Erubami, lamented the situation, saying the government should not lack the courage to prosecute and jail those who have over the years robbed Nigeria blind as it is with the present administration.

He said the money stolen is not the issue as circulated in the media, the most important part is getting the money back and putting it to use for the development of the country.

Erubami said, “This has been difficult because the thieves are affiliated to the political office-holders who themselves have benefited from the fraud alliance.

“Above all, government lacks courage to prosecute their fraudster friends and jail them appropriately.

“The question of N5tn is an understatement. If you add up all stolen funds from 1999 to date without going back to the military era, you will be surprised at the quantum of money Nigeria has lost.”

Rotimi Fasakin, the CPC National Publicity Secretary in an angry retort said they were not surprised that N5tn has been stolen the public under Jonathan’s watch, which he called “the impecunious state,” adding that he wondered what 2015 would look like under the same administration.

He said, “In CPC, we have always maintained that this is the most corrupt, most incompetent, and most unpatriotic administration in Nigeria’s chequered history.”

Reacting to the development, a United States based activist, Smart Jaja, said the Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration, which built the foundation Jonathan is operating on was a colossal fraud from the word go.

However, the Presidency on Monday said the claims circulated in the media were just mere mischievous attempts to accuse the Jonathan-led administration of condoning corruption, denying the allegation the president is jiggling with corruption.
