NERC and USAID Partner on Power Roadmap Conference
As part of its resolve to ensure that Nigeria’s quest to boost its power supply is fully utilized, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says it will host a strategic session for potential investors and stakeholders to explore the avenues of developing and harnessing the gas-to-power supply.
The forum which is slated for Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital will be organized in partnership with the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and United States Aid agency(USAID) for three-days engaging private investor groups, analysts and people with keen interest in the power sector.
One of Nigeria’s major challenges remains steady power supply across the country, but with the assurance of President Goodluck Jonathan that by June 2013 most states will experience uninterrupted power supply, the price regime and utilization of the alternative sources of power in the country will become a crucial aspect of the roadmap of achieving success in the sector.
In the midst of a very competitive globe were some key developed Nations have stable power, as a result of unlocking the potentials of various alternatives sources of power generation, distribution and supply, Nigeria is determined to also take its place with viable policies for the Power and Electricity sector.
Mrs Maryam Abubakar, the Assistant General Manager, Media for the NERC stated that the workshop would concentrate on issues ranging from global gas-to-power business in relation to the Nigerian gas market as well as its potential to enhance electricity production in the Country.
In an interview with ThisDay newspapers she said,“Regulators will need to appreciate the economic factors relevant to gas projects in order to affectively establish prices to recover investments. How should these prices be contained in the tariff or other pricing structures for natural gas production, gas processing, gas transportation and distribution, these are some of what will be discussed at the workshop.”
It is expected that this forum would further give insight into the prospects of the gas-to- power development in the country, that can boost electricity supply in the country, with the active engagement of potential investors.
The NERC would also have the task of ensuring that the price regime for electricity consumption in the country is moderate and considerate of the sufferings and plight of Nigerians.
