Most young Nigerians are either looking to work for Shell, Mobil or NNPC. But that was the last thing on Ajibola Awojobi’s mind. In 2010, he decided to go the entrepreneurial route. He was fascinated with bulk messaging- that allows people to send customized SMS  via the internet, so the young entrepreneur decided to make this to spread the word and promised himself one day people will be able to send customized SMS from their phones.

BetaSMS was born with just a laptop and an internet dongle on loan from a friend. However the vision was clear. Ajibola wanted to provide a service to people that was superior to what the other bulk SMS companies were providing their clientele. It was more about how to provide quality service to a discerning clientele than simply making a profit.

The strategy paid off and within two years, BetaSMS has emerged one of the top ten in the mass communication industry. Now the company has gone beyond just providing quality bulk SMS services to providing Voice SMS (also known as robo calls), and e-mail marketing.

Ajibola says his clients come from various walks of life, from the intending couple who want to get their wedding invitations out to friends, family and colleagues in the most efficient and cost-effective manner, to the retailer/service provider who wants to let as many Nigerians as possible in on the latest deals on his products/services.

Getting close to the top is one thing in Nigeria’s quickly growing ICT industry, however staying there is a whole different story.
