FG Swears in Committees to Kick Start UNIDO Programmes

The Federal Government has sworn in Committees on the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Programme for Nigeria.

 

Representatives from a variety of related Ministries, Departments, Institutions as well as the Private Sector, were among the inaugurated committees by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, Mr. Dauda Kigbu, a moment ago in Abuja.

 

Kigbu urged the members of the committee to see the job as service to the nation and advised them to make sure they realize the aims of the country agenda to the advantage of the nation; he said this while inaugurating the committee.

 

The Permanent Secretary stated that UNIDO Country Programme was a methodological collaboration between federal government of Nigeria and UNIDO.

Although the programme was expected to terminate 2012, it has now been extended for the period of 18 months to go in line with the Nation’s transformation agenda as well as the expanded mandate of the ministry.

 

Kigbu said that the purpose of the Country Programme was to encourage industrialisation and help Nigeria realize its vision 2020 goal.

 

Mr. Patrick Kormarwa, the UNIDO Country Director in Nigeria in his speech, the agreement signed with Nigeria has a structure for amendment of the document, to accommodate the precedence of government.

 

Mrs. Victoria Familola, the Acting Director Policy, Standards Research and Statistics, also stated that the subjects and machineries of the Country Programme were for poverty cutback, trade power building , energy and environment, that the main aim of the project was to assist in areas of job creation, poverty reduction and development of the non oil sector.

 

To cover the areas mentioned, the committee was split into four consisting of Poverty Reduction through Productive Activities; Country Programme steering committee (CPSC) and National Planning Commission (NPC) and Energy and Environment, she said.
