Heavy Traffic Envisioned as Lagos Ibadan Expressway Reconstruction Commences

The management of Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, concessionaires for the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has advised motorists that it has commenced reconstruction works on major sections of the road.

The company disclosed that it has sub-contracted major reconstruction works on four critical areas of the road to Messrs Borino Prono Construction Company and CCC Construction Nigeria Ltd.

A statement issued by Bi-Courtney’s spokesman, Dipo Kehinde, said: “The reconstruction exercise will go on simultaneously in four critical portions of the road.”

“The reconstruction exercise will go on simultaneously in four critical portions of the road. We urge motorists to drive with care, observe the rules and obey traffic signs.

“The reconstruction will go on simultaneously in the four portions. It will begin from Kilometre 32, to Sagamu, towards Ibadan.”

It added, “We are working with all stakeholders, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), the Nigeria Police Force, tanker owners and other road users, to minimize the impact of this exercise on motorists.

“Bi-Courtney commends the commitment and the vision of Mr. President to infrastructure development through Public Private Partnership (PPP). This vision, being strongly promoted by the Federal Ministry of Works is worthy of support. And we assure Nigerians that the Federal Government and our company are committed to this all-important road project.”

    I hope they properly drain the roads, use Stone Mastic Asphalt, and use polyester fabrics at the base of swampy areas. These should mitigate the common issues we have with building roads in Nigeria. The Marshall system is antiquated and they should research Superpave systems. More lanes and shoulders should save lives, and signs such as slippery when wet and curves ahead should be properly sited. We keep hearing that overpasses are too expensive, but we cannot afford not to have them. A lot of accidents and deaths can be avoided from Trucks having to turn at little breaks on the Highway.
