Tin Can Island Port: Nigerian Customs spawns N18.4 billion in August

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port (TCIP) Command, Apapa, Lagos has said it spawned N18.4 billion revenue in August.

In July this year the command generated N17.3 billion, things are looking good. The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Chris Osunkwo, who revealed this in Lagos yesterday, said that only N17.8 billion was realised in August last year.

Osunkwo maintained that the augment in revenue in August this year was due to commitment of men and officers of the command who have not given up in the discharge of their constitutional functions and tasks.

He in addition credited the augment in the revenue made by the command to the existing headship of the command and the assistance of Customs Headquarters, Abuja.

He further asserted  “The right leadership in Tin Can Island Port Command Area led by the Customs Area Controller, as well as the support and good motivation by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Alhaji Inde Dikko Abdullahi have made everybody to work very hard in revenue collection as well as anti-smuggling activities. Four days to the end of August, we were on our toes because our revenue figure was about 14 billion. We are grateful to God that all our efforts were not in vain because we were able to generate N18.4 billion at the end of the month.”

Osunkwo who has worked with numerous CACs in the command stated that the service had been taking on convincing methods to give importers heads up to make certain that they follow the guidelines drawn by the Nigerian constitution to avoid lapses.

“The methods and strategies used by the TCIP command have been technical and helpful to the realization of the set goals and objectives,” stating that the controller general of customs always reminds stakeholders to always comply with the rules and regulations of NCS.

Osunkwo also made known the fact that that “the command recorded 63 seizures between January and August whose duty paid value (DPV) stood at N2.9 billion. According to him, the seizures included vehicles, furniture, soaps, used tyres, washing machines, used electronics, computer bags, second-hand clothes, refrigerators and women bags.”

He however vowed that the NCS, TCIP Command would not give up in its bid to do more in the coming months to add to the revenue it generates into the treasury of the Federal Government.

The monthly revenue generated by the command has not been uniform as it foes up and down, however the highest revenue generated in a month was N19.2 and 19 billion in February and March respectively.
