Police to Join LASTMA in Enforcing Lagos Traffic Law, Contravening IGP’s Directive

Indications have emerged that the police serving in Lagos State will join the Lagos State government and its traffic officials, LASTMA, in enforcing the new Lagos traffic law.

The State Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Umar Manko, addressing journalists after a meeting with the state Security Council at the Lagos House Marina said nobody would be spared as the police carried out its duties. He said the delay in enforcement of the law was to give members of the public time to ge enlightened about the new law.

His words: “Since the governor signed the law, it has become law. The fact that it has not been massively enforced does not mean that it is not in existence. So we have just finished a meeting. Everybody now knows there is a new law and that it is going to be fully enforced.”

According to him, “Government has done its part, public enlightenment has been made, road repairs are going on and there are traffic signs everywhere, therefore, no citizen has the right to say that he does not know. The police are going to start the enforcement in full and nobody is going to be spared.”

It is not known how the State police intend to enforce the law, after the Inspector General of Police earlier gave an instruction asking the police rank and file across the country to spend their efforts fighting crime instead of extorting money from motorists under the guise of traffic offences.
