TUC Hails Nnaji’s Departure

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), yesterday in Lagos, described the resignation of Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, as a welcome development to the sector.

The union’s president, Peter Esele and the General Secretary, Chief John Kolawole, said this in a news statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, added that his resignation would also create a level playing ground for participants in the sector.

The union said that there would be transparency and citizens-based reform when all participants have a level playing ground to bid for the privatisation of Power Holding Company Nigeria (PHCN).

TUC frowned at the former minister’s role in the ongoing reform, alleging that he had interest in some companies that were major players within the power sector.

“It is unethical for Nnaji to champion the power sector reform, as well as have interest in some companies bidding to buy some of the companies that have emerged from the unbundled PHCN.

“It is morally wrong. That is why we see his exit as a welcome development that will create a level playing ground for all participants in the sector,” they said.

TUC reiterated the need for public office holders to conduct their affairs in transparent manner and urged stakeholders not to allow the nation’s leaders use their offices to enrich themselves.

The union called on President Goodluck Jonathan to replace Nnaji with somebody that would assist him in fulfilling his reforms in the power sector and deliver the nation from perpetual darkness.

It also urged all parties in the ongoing negotiation between electricity workers and government— in respect of their severance package— to settle the issues amicably.
