Fuel Scarcity Averted as Marketers Suspend Strike

Oil marketers under the aegis of Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMA) have called off their strike due to the steps taken by the Federal Government to settle their greivances.

The marketers had embarked on a strike which lasted 72 hours due to the failure of government to pay its members their subsidy claims.

The Finance Ministry had postponed subsidy payment due to its inquiry into the integrity of the subsidy claims being submitted by marketers. Okonjo-Iweala’s due diligence exercise was necessitated and justified by the revelations from different investigative committees which found that hundreds of billions of Naira were paid based on fraudulent subsidy claims submitted by marketers.

The Federal Government has begun to prosecute some of the oil marketing firms indicted in the fuel subsidy fraud. In the same vein, it is keeping the peace with marketers by paying the claims of those properly verified.

Chief Dapo Abiodun , President of DAPPMA said, “We have been reliably informed by PPPRA that the Federal Ministry of Finance has requested for all their batch verified, subsidy claims for processing and immediate payment.”

“This followed a meeting held with stakeholders on Friday, July 27, 2012. As an association of very responsible and patriotic Nigerians, in the best interest of Nigerian public, we do accept and take in good faith that the Federal Ministry of Finance will live up to the promises made at the said meeting.”
