BPE and Manitoba Sign Management Agreement on Transmission Company Today

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and the Manitoba Hydroelectric company of Canada are to sign a management agreement for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) today.

The agreement will hand over the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria to Manitoba for a period of 3 years, during which local workers will understudy their operations and a transfer of skills is expected to take place. The deal is reported to fetch Manitoba about $ 23.7 million or N 3.7 billion.

The Ministry of Power and certain factions in the TCN head office in Abuja are having a running battle over the introduction of Manitoba to the facility. Last week, certain factions of the staff of TCN held a strike and prevented members of the Manitoba team and Ministry of Power from gaining access into the building.

This action led to the deployment of police and army personnel to secure the facility and restore law and order. The TCN workers are protesting labour issues bordering on payment of pension and gratuity, amongst other issues.
