Private Sector Calls on Government to Suspend Electricity Tariff Hike

By on May 28, 2012

The Organized Private Sector (OPS) has called on the government not to implement its proposed tariff hike scheduled for launch in a few days.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos over the weekend, the Chairman of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), John Aluya, stated that government has not yet gotten the power generation, transmission and distribution process right and therefore should not consider implementing the increase.

His words, “At the moment, we don’t even know whether what is generated is properly transmitted. If all these three issues related to electricity are resolved, it will then be a better way for the government to justify the increase. But for now, I don’t see any benefit.”

Also echoing similar views, the Director General of the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) called on government to suspend the initiative until regular power supply in the country was achieved.

He said implementing it prematurely would lead to the death of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.
