Government Agencies are Deadbeats, Refuse to Pay Their Power Bills – Nnaji
Minister of Power, Barth Nnaji has lashed out on government agencies in the country for negligence to a seemingly basic responsibility – failure to pay their power bills.
In an interview with international news agency, Reuters, the minister said, “We cannot continue to operate a system where government agencies become dead beats. They have to pay. Every government agency has a budget for this, they simply don’t pay.”
Government Agencies currently owe the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) $140 million or N 21 billion.
Nnaji also said the Ministry would have completed the sale of 11 distribution firms to private investors.
The ministry hopes to increase power generation to 6,000 MW by year end, 10,000 MW by end of 2013 and 40,000 MW by the year 2020.
