‘Nigeria will not be Shortchanged’ by British Airlines – Harold Demuren

The Director General of the Nigerian Civil aviation Autority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren has said that the Federal Government will not relent in its efforts to ensure that foreign carriers, particularly Britis airways and Virgin Atlantic stop their exploitation of the Nigerian market.

The British carriers charge Nigerians double what Ghanaians pay for routes of similar distance. The NCAA boss lamented that many Nigerians now travel to Ghana, before booking a British Airways flight in order to save funds.

He called the practice of the airlines “discriminatory” and “anti-competitive” and shortchanges Nigerians.

He said: “Nigeria will not be short-changed, we will pursue this to the end. Collusion or exploitation of Nigerians must stop, but exploration is encouraged. It is unfortunate that Nigerians now go to Ghana to fly to United Kingdom because of the regional fare imbalance. They discovered that they can spend the same money for a business ticket in Nigeria for two business class tickets in Ghana.

“We won’t allow this because we have the market advantage in the continent and one of the highest in the world. This is a battle and we stand by it. Anti-competitive practices must stop.”
