Governors Fault Quantum of Funds Still Spent on Fuel Subsidy

By on April 6, 2012

The Nigerian Governors Forum have raised concerns with the manner the Federal Government is still deducting funds from the Federation Account.

The Forum has deemed the deductions to be illegal, and released a communiqué to that effect after they met on Wednesday night.

The communiqué signed by their leader, Rotimi Amaechi called on the government to review the revenue sharing formula.

The communiqué states, “The forum deliberated extensively on the continuing unconstitutional deductions by the Federal Government from the federation account in the name of oil subsidy which negates the principles of federalism and budgetary provisions.

“It noted that despite the increase in pump price of petrol, the quantum of subsidy deduction is still worrisome.”

The state governors are worried about the continues increase in deductions for fuel subsidy, despite the increase in the pump price of petrol from N 65 to N 97. They are of the opinion that as the citizenry now bear the larger chunk of the price of petrol, the burden should be lighter on the Federation Account.

The governors also discussed polio eradication and security strengthening measures.
