Covenant University Signs MoU with Bluechip Companies on Employment for Graduates

Authorities of the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, have said the institution will sign Memoranda of Understanding with corporate organisations in the country to employ the school’s graduates.

The Dean, Student Affairs, of the university, Dr. Akan Williams, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria at the sideline of an event to mark the university’s maiden career fair on Tuesday in Ota.

Williams said that such collaboration was necessary due to the high rate of unemployment among Nigerian graduates.

He said, “We are currently talking with top-rated organisations, which have indicated interest in having some of our students upon the completion of their various programmes in the university.

“The whole essence of this fair is to bridge the gap between the gown and industry by way of exposing our students to what the industry expects of them in the external context.

“Of course, we know that these students, on graduation, could opt to be on their own, seek for employment or chose to further their studies. So, we at our own end want to ensure that the future of those who chose to work after graduating is secured.”

Williams, who said that the fair was going to be an annual event, noted that a lot more companies had already indicated interest in having job placement collaboration with the university.

He said already, a notable company had offered job placements for 15 students of the university after graduation.

The dean added that the relationship would be sustained in line with the efforts put in place by the university to equip its students with skills development side-by-side formal education.

The National Sales Company Manager, PZ Plc, one of the participating companies, Mr. Satisha Kunwal, also told NAN that the career fair was one of such avenues to catch young graduates.

He said, “We are here to also search for such talents who could fit into our company because we believe they have a lot to offer. We are aware of the kind of training that these students are getting here in preparation for work at the external context.

“We are convinced that at this stage, they could possess such qualities like accountability, the drive, create networks and oneness.”

   If those kids are really good, let them compete with their counterparts from other Universities on a level playing field.

     There’s nothing wrong with a university providing leverage for its students: afterall, if more universities did this, it would reduce the number of unemployed youths & hence less competition 4 jobs.
