Senate Faults DPR Over Failed Project

The Senate has castigated the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, over its failure to install gas pipelines that will boost  gas supply in the country.

A committee headed by  Senator Nkechi Nwoagu  had summoned DPR to explain why the Federal government should be including the gas project in its budget since 2009 and only 8.3 progress had been made on the job so far.

The  installation of the monitoring equipment project was contracted to Riverman by the DPR to determine the amount generated from gas productions and to know the revenue that should go to the government..

But since its inception in 2009 the project has been left uncompleted.

Nwaogu had atressed that it was disheartening  that since 2009 only 10 out of the 116 projected installations across the country were completed.

She said: “We can’t be saying we are seventh largest producer of gas and the records for the gas generation are abysmal. The commitment by DPR to perform is not there. We are being denied the revenue we are expected to derive from gas.

“You sit back and you are the regulator. Are the oil companies going to tell DPR when to allow them access to use the equipment before you enforce the compliance? For oil companies to tell you what they have and you record it is unacceptable.”

In his defence, the Deputy Director of DPR gas, Mr. Oliver Okaraorjiakor,had explained   that the oil companies could not
continue with  the installation due to the problem of technology compatibility.

He also expressed concern over hackers who may likely hack the project.
