Lagos Airport Suffers Four Hour Blackout on Sunday as FAAN taxes Travelers

The Muritala Mohammed International Airport was thrown into the stone age on Sunday as the electricity supply was paused for several hours due to power failure.

Incoming and outgoing passengers became victims of an unavoidable heatwave as the airport officials could not hurriedly move the arrival and departure queues due to insufficient lighting. Many officials resorted to a less than ingenious method of screening passengers via the light from their mobile phones.

This development comes during a period when the Federal Government has approved N 32 billion for the upgrade and renovation of all the airports in the country.

Managing director of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), George Uriesi recently disclosed that over N 16 billion had already been released to contractors for phase 1 of the project.

Yet there does not seem to be any succor in the plight of air travelers in the country anytime soon. To make matters worse FAAN has been collecting N 1,000 airport use surcharge from local travelers and $ 50 from international travelers.

It remains to be seen what the proceeds of the takings are being used to develop.
