NITEL/MTEL Waste of Government Resources – Labour

By on March 7, 2012

The Senior Staff Association of Communications Transport and Corporations (SSACTAC) has aligned itself with government plans to liquidate the Nigerian Telecommunications Company and its subsidiaries, on the condition that government settles its liabilities to creditors and staff.

Comrade Adetunji Adesunkanmi of SSACTAC said, “We welcome government’s decision to liquidate NITEL/MTEL because it was a waste of resources for government to continue to keep NITEL. So it is better government liquidates NITEL because the structures are degenerating by the day.”

He also disclosed that government is currently owing over 7 months salary.

“We advise government to use the proceeds to settle third party creditors and pay the entitlements of the 400 workers manning the assets. Government is not willing to commit any fund to NITEL and it is does not want to hand it over to the workers to manage, so liquidation will be in the best interest of the economy.”
