Ecological funds: Ministry to face probe -Senate
The Ministry of Environment would be investigated over perceived mismanagement of the ecological funds, the Senate had said.
The upper legislative chambers made this known during the second reading of a bill seeking an Act to establish the Erosion Control and Prevention Commission and vest it with the responsibility for the prevention, control and management and redress of erosion and for other related purposes, 2012 in a bill sponsored by Senator Hope Uzodinma (PDP, Imo West).
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu blames the states and units in charge of the funds for not making proper use of the funds they had received since 1999, noting that it was necessary to investigate how the ecological funds had been squandered.
His words: “What has the Environment Ministry, through its erosion control department, has done to address the challenge of erosion? What has it done with the funds received so far?” he said.
While blaming the states and the unit of the Environment Ministry for performing their duty, Senate President David Mark said they are responsible for erosion control.
