Subsidy report: Committee will not bow to any pressure-Lawmaker

The House of Representatives today vowed not to succumb to treat coming from any group or individuals on the fuel subsidy probe.

Speaking with Journalists, the Chairman House committee on Media, Zakari Mohammed disclosed that  members of the Farouk Lawan-headed committee are under intense pressure on the planned release of the report.

But, he assured Nigerians that members of the House of Representatives are in support to fish out the culprits.

According to him ” I can assured that members of the committee are putting in their best and other lawmakers are in support of their probing exercise, I promised you that they will never cave in.”

There had been allegations at the conclusion of the public hearing on fuel subsidy regime that the committee has been infiltrated by those indicted by the investigative panel.

Many people had also expressed the opinion that the report will either be diluted as to make it ineffective or that it may not see the light of day.

Last week, the Chairman of the ad hoc committee that carried out the probe, Hon. Farouk Lawan, revealed that the report of the committee will be laid before the House ‘’in three weeks’ time.”

Mohammed said from the moment the subsidy probe ended, the committee has been under “intense pressure.’’

He, however, expressed confidence that the committee and its members will hold their grounds.

Mohammed said contrary to the pessimism being expressed in some quarters, the subsidy probe will not go the way of previous probe panels, the reports of which were not released.

According to the House spokesman, all legislative machinery will be deployed to ensure that those indicted pay for their sins.

He said: “I want to also say that that investigation has developed a life of its own. You cannot kill it. It is living and it will continue until we get to that logical conclusion where people have been indicted and they are also brought to book.”
