Lagos Tank Farms Time Bombs waiting to Explode – Experts
According to Industry Stakeholders including Residents’ Associations, Oil and Gas Workers and Customs Officials, the location of tank farms in Apapa and Kirikiri are a time bomb waiting to explode.
Even overlooking the billions of naira in losses these tank farms cause the National Economy due to loss of productivity hours as a result of chaotic traffic, more quantifiable is the tragic loss of life that could occur.
Ben Nchee, National Secretary of National Council of Managing Directors of Customs Agent said, “Lagos should enact a law for trucks to operate only at night between 10pm and 6am or at best tank farms should be relocated. There is a tank farm now springing up in Kirikiri Town, where people are residing. This is a time bomb waiting to explode because if there is an explosion in one of the tank farms, the ports and the whole of Lagos will be burnt down in minutes”.
The stakeholders which include the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), have also called on the tank farm operators to introduce a call-up system in order to decongest the roads by encouraging truck drivers to stay in their parks until they are called upon to lift products.
