PENGASSAN Threatens Strike Action in Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and other States

By on February 10, 2012

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) have issued a strike notice to the government of Rivers State, threatening to halt oil and gas processes in Rivers and nine other states including Abia, Bayelsa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Ebonyi, Enugu, Benue and Imo.

The dispute stems from a recent incident where PENGASSAN claims its members were assaulted by thugs during a peaceful protest against VAM Onne Nigeria Ltd. The oil and gas union claims the management of the company collaborated with local politicians to sponsor thugs numbering about 15 to disrupt a protest against the management of VAM Onne for victimizing 27 of its members who are undergoing a disciplinary action that includes suspension without payment of salaries.

According to a statement released from the Port Harcourt zonal leaders, they claim that there is an instruction from PENGASSAN headquarters to embark on a total strike after 7 days from yesterday if their demands are not met.
