Power Ministry Plans additional 6,000 Mega Watts from New and Existing IPPs
According to the minister of Power, Barth Nnaji, Nigeria is set to see a boost in electricity generation, about 3,300 Mega Watts, from new Independent Power Projects (IPPs) within the next two years.
Te minister also disclosed that existing IPPs would generate an additional capacity of 3,509 Mega Watts.
Speaking at a forum National Power Sector Retreat themed, “Leapfrogging into Sustainable Power Supply” in Abuja the minister said, “government will incentivize the private sector to make investments in the domestic gas industry by ensuring that the approved price to be paid to gas producers remains close to export parity price to LNG plants or other projects in Nigeria, and most importantly that this price is passed through to electricity consumers.”
He further stated, ““We have brought all the stakeholders here so they can all contribute to make sure that we deliver on the Power Sector Reform roadmap. It is important that we hear from them on what is preventing them, or can prevent them, from delivering so that we can see how we can help as government. This government is determined to go from being one that puts obstacles to growth to one that supports groups and individuals to provide their best for the country, so that we all can benefit from their services.”
Speaking on the ongoing protests and threatened strike by members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Professor Nnaji stated, “The union has made some progress in understanding the reform, especially the kind that this government is bringing to the power sector. It is a fact that whenever you have a reform, there is bound to be some resistance. Reform, by its nature is progressive but people who are comfortable where they are would rather maintain the status quo. You have over a thousand people sitting around in PHCN headquarters, doing nothing but getting paid every day. The law of reform has transferred everything in PHCN to the successor companies, and the workers are supposed to go to the successor companies. Nobody is being relieved of their employment; if anything they are being paid their whole salaries including their transfer allowances. The fact remains that if you are working for a company, you cannot tell the company whether to transfer you or when to transfer you from a particular location. If you happen not to like a transfer, then you are at liberty to resign.”

I am still laughing Nigeria .
As big as Nigeria , we should be ashame to be writting about 6600mw of electricity .
Smaller countries have 20000MW of electricity and they are building more 20000mw .
A gaint of africa have a miopic view of lets say 10000mw.
The government is not serious at all about this light issues .
Infact the workers of NEPA ,PHCN seem to be working againt there job . Instead of generating light , they are busy genarting Darkness the more and more for nigerians .Its a big shame for the minister and his agents .
Nigeria needs a minimum of 20000mw at least for now, after all these years of wasted period and beaurocracy in the sector .
This will boost every sector .Everything in nigeria will begin to move with light.
The view of the power minister for 66000 shows how un-interested he is to make light a reality for nigerians .
Light which ought to be a service from the Government is made to be luxury ,means of exploitation to the poor masses . Haba Niaja.
Can the leaders have some shame and do something well at least for once .
