Fuel Distribution Nationwide to be Aided by Railways

Fuel availability nationwide is set to improve considerably as a new distribution and logistics system in the form of Rail cargo is employed by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

The NRC will today take delivery of twenty (20) pressurized tank wagons manufactured in China.

The Managing director of the NRC, Mr. Adeseyi Sijuade took members of the House Committee on Land Transport in Lagos on a tour of facilities in the Rail sector.

Sijuade said, “The corporation is preparing to resume movement of petroleum products to different parts of the country. In this regard, I am glad to report that 20 brand new pressurized light oil wagons ordered by the corporation from Thorn Engineering/CRSBG in China arrived in the country via Apapa Port on January 20, 2012 and will be put to use soon.”

Rail transport is already being used to haul cement in the country. Recently Lafarge distributed 600 tonnes of cement from its plant in Ewekoro to Illorin by train.

The NRC also disclosed that an MOU was in existence between the corporation and the Osun State government. The service is part of the O-HUB initiative of Osun State government which according to the website of the State Government is  a” Mid-Regional Market to ignite massive commercial activities in the state by drawing merchants of goods and agricultural products to the state for onward transportation to Lagos markets.”

Sijuade said, “The corporation also intends to sign a new MoU with potential partners this year; business discussions are on with some organisations and state governments in this regard.”

The Chairman of the House Committee on Land Transport, Musa Sarkin  expressed dismay at the dilapidated state of the rail infrastructure in the country.
