Several Container Ships Stuck Waiting Outside Ports May divert Cargo
Due to the closure of the sea ports, Maersk Line, an arm of Danish shipping group AP Moller has been unable to deliver containers laden with food and consumer goods to the Apapa Ports.
The company is considering diverting the container shipments to ports in neighboring countries if the strike is not called off by next week.
Sonny Dahl, a representative of the company, speaking to Reuters said, “Everything is at a standstill – there are no operations going on and everything is at a general strike level.”
He also disclosed that eight of the company’s container ships were affected by the closure of the ports.
Nigeria represents 60% of Maersk Line’s business in West Africa.
In related news, senior customs officials have said Nigeria is losing about N 1 billion daily as a result of the closure of the Apapa port.
