Senate summons Shell over Coastal Crude oil spill

The Senate on Thursday summoned the Managing Director, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) over a major oil spill at its Bonga deepwater facility off the Nigerian coast.
Also invited over the massive spill are the leadership of National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the leadership of National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).
Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, Senator Bukola Saraki, who announced the summon at a press conference in Abuja said that the action became necessary in order for the management of Shell, NESREA and NOSDRA to throw light on measures to contain the oil spill.

Saraki said that he has been briefed about a major oil spill on the SNEPCo’s 200,000 barrel-per-day capacity Bonga deepwater facility, approximately 120 kilometers off the Nigerian coast.
He said that information available to him suggested that the spill released over 30,000 barrels of oil off the Nigerian coast.
The lawmaker recalled that the last time Nigeria had such high level spillage was in 1997 from a Mobil Producing facility in Nigeria .
He noted that the good thing is that from the information available to the committee there has been no loss of life.
