NNPC’s GMD Clueless: Doesn’t Know Where Nigeria’s 65,000 Barrels Go Everyday

Group Managing Director of NNPC, Austin Oniwon appeared before the Joint Senate Committee on Downstream, Appropriation and Finance yesterday and was short of accused of perjuring himself under oath. The National Oil company apex boss was being asked a series of questions relating to how 445,000 barrels of crude allocated to the refineries daily are utilized.

Oniwon incensed the Committee as he could not account for where some of the barrels went. Magnus Abe, Chairman of the Committee said: “You are on oath and you told us you don’t have the figures and now you are telling us crude is taken to Cote D’Ivoire. It is unfortunate.”

Oniwon testified that 80,000 barrels are allocated to Warri refinery, whilst 90,000 are allocated to Port Harcourt refinery, even as the Kaduna refinery currently receives nil due to being shut down. He also stated that 150,000 barrels of crude are swapped daily for refined petrol products with Duke Oil (an NNPC subsidiary), and Trafigura (an international energy commodities dealer).

The NNPC boss also confirmed that 60,000 barrels of crude is sent to Ivory Coast’s SIR refinery which has an 80,000 bpd capacity.

Oniwon was unable to account for where the outstanding 65,000 barrels of crude are, alluding to possible government cover-up or ineptitude.
