Nigerian Roads And The Odious Ranking

A report by the United Nations has ranked Nigerian’s roads as the second worst road globally. For decaying road infrastructure, we have invited the odious ranking as 191 out of 192 countries of the world’s unsafest roads.

Nigeria Roads and traffic deaths data is put 162 deaths per 100,000 populations. A sad pointer to how much government intervention has become futile despite huge promises made to transform our roads. Nigeria roads have become a death trap and only recently we started hearing talks about concession.

FRSC and its Corps Marshall are as a result is working hard to bring down RTC (road traffic clashes) by half. This means reducing it down to 81 deaths per 100,000 people.

With our roads in shambles, a World Report on road traffic injuries has offered recommendations to checking road traffic clashes.

This report asks for allocation of financial and human resources to checking this problem. It also asks for support for local policy and international cooperation to addressing this challenge.

80 of RTC occur in developing world and Africa has been described as having the worst rate or highest death rate. Expert has it that if nothing is done, death by RTC could escalate by 65% thereby overtaking malaria and tuberculosis between 2015-2020.

If there is something so bothering about this whole thing, it is just how obvious it has been. We have always known of this. We can start counting the hundreds of thousand Nigerians who die on Ore-Benin road and other roads across the federation.

I feel so bad with this ugly situation and more so painfully as a result of the fact that we can put a stop to this carnage happening on our roads daily. Hope this can alter our disposition to issues like this.
