The Foreign Airlines Swindle

By on December 5, 2011

Recently British Airways was invited to answer charges of fare price fixing but it would seem nothing has improved as these foreign airlines continue swindling Nigerians. If we recalled very well BA was compelled to refund to passengers $235million with a threat to reduce its flight to Lagos from 7% to 3%. Still nothing happened as these foreign airlines continue to milk unsuspecting Nigerians and taking these illicit sums with blatant disregard for the ethics of the business.

Revelations from Businessday pointed out that Nigerian passengers who travelled on BA, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Lufthansa and Air France-KLM, may have spent the outrageous sum of $15.8million (NGN2.53Billion) above passengers who go through Accra with the same foreign airlines in 21 days.

This clearly demonstrates the insensitivity and callous conduct of these foreign airlines that are wont to treat Nigerians with questionable disdain and aloofness. It shows government poor readiness and lack of capacity to manage its ministries as the aviation minister is still stuck at addressing the BA’s irresponsibility while the other foreign airlines enjoy their illicit revenues.

As it is now, we demand that the other foreign airlines follow suit in coming up with an ‘equidistant fares’. The irritating high fares charged can no longer be allowed here. It is either they adjust or face punitive measures. These big fare differentials  should not be tolerated one day further; if there is any time for a patriotic fervor it is now. We say no to dubious air fares.
