Nigerian Ports Authority And Minister Of Transport To Ease Traffic On Port Roads

The situation of traffic congestion along port areas has made the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar to charge the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to produce a document that would ease the traffic for road users within a period of two weeks.

The document when provided would not only provide information on how to tackle the problem of traffic but would also contain precise areas where there is poor accessibility to the ports.

Senator Idris Umar acknowledged that the traffic on the roads especially in Lagos is uncoordinated. Also, traffic in the ports areas leaves much to be worried about because of commercial purposes.

He observed this when he made an unexpected visit to some ports areas recently. He expressed dismay at the present situation and stated the need for a healthier environment at the ports.

According to him, there are many people who loiter around the ports area without a purpose adding to human traffic and pose as obstacles to the smooth flow of business. He also pointed out the effect of empty containers abandoned all over the ports as hindrances to Nigeria as the hub of West Africa commercial power.

Umar stated that the ports Authority should provide a strategy to stop touts from loitering in the ports area and must provide a plan to dispose empty containers that have no business at the port.
