UBA Grants Scholarship To Secondary School Students

United Bank for Africa Plc grants scholarship to three Nigerian secondary school students to the tune of N2.25 million in order to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria through writing, as well as reiterate its commitment to give back to the society,

The students were awarded the scholarships at the completion of the bank’s yearly national essay competition organised for secondary schools in Nigeria in Lagos.

Speaking at the award ceremony, the Deputy Managing Director of the bank, Kennedy Uzoka, noted that the bank as part of its corporate social responsibility had over the years, sought means of impacting the lives of Nigerian youths by becoming actively involved in the enhancement of the quality of education in the country.

According to him, the essay competition came on the heels of the ‘Read Africa’ initiative conceived to promote creative thinking and the development of intellect among Nigerian students.

The recipients of the essay competition are Amodu Enitan of the International School, University of Lagos, who won best essay writer award and a scholarship worth one million naira, followed by Orji Philippa of Dorty International Secondary School, Aba with a cash prize of seven hundred and fifty thousand naira, while Nwajiaku-Nwadike Nneka of Queens College, Lagos secured the third position to win a scholarship worth five hundred thousand naira.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, UBA Foundation, Ijeoma Aso said that on the rationale for selecting the winners of the essay competition, “three winners were selected after another test was conducted for the twelve finalists, who emerged in the UBA Foundation Essay Competition for secondary school students in Nigeria. The 12 students were selected by a panel of assessors from over 1000 entries received on the topic ‘Me and My Career’.

“The twelve students were selected based on carefully selected criteria, which included content, organisation, mechanical accuracy, expression and relevance to the theme. To determine the three top winners, the twelve finalists wrote a new essay on a new topic under the examination of the panel of judges. Three finalists emerged at the end of the exercise and they will win scholarship prizes that will be utilised for tuition in Nigerian universities of their choices and in addition, they will automatically become UBA scholars,” she added.

Ijeoma Aso, said that the UBA Foundation National Essay Competition in Nigeria was designed to serve as a relentless drive on global advocacy to improve Nigeria’s educational standard.
