Airtel Nigeria Upgrades Base Stations with Flexenclosure’s Power Solution

Airtel Nigeria  has inked a deal with Ericsson, a leading provider of mobile telecommunications equipment, to use Flexenclosure’s green energy solution called E-site for upgrading an initial lot of 250 base stations powered by diesel in Nigeria.

With this E-site solution, Airtel can now power its mobile base stations located throughout Nigeria using solar energy. This innovative solution is designed and produced by Flexenclosure, a Sweden-based company specializing in smart site power management systems for off-grid base station sites. Its power sources are renewable energies such as wind and solar and it has a battery bank to store the energy. It uses specially designed wind turbines for optimal power production.

The advanced control system of E-site solution assures the storage of optimal power from the alternative energy sources and the process is efficiently managed through the utilization of its battery bank. According to the contract, Ericsson will deploy and maintain the E-site solution for all the base station sites.

Airtel has successfully tested the solution in Kenya and has experienced significant reduction in diesel usage and CO2 emissions against a round-the-clock diesel powered site. The Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of International Business for Bharti Airtel, Manoj Kohli stated that the company is excited to set a trend in implementing advanced green power solutions and decreasing its diesel dependency. The company plans to launch this green power solution in its other sites in the future, he added.
