Nigeria Railway Corporation says Cost of Cement to Reduce

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) on Sunday announced that the cost of cement would soon drop due to the haulage of cement by rail from the Lafarge Cement Factory, Ewekoro in Ogun to other parts of the country.

Mr Seyi Sijuwade, the Managing Director of the NRC, told newsmen in Ibadan that the corporation had successfully hauled 20 wagons, which amounted to 750 tonnes of cement, from the Ewekoro factory to Ibadan. Ordinarily, it would take 25 trailers to haul the same quantity.

Sijuwade said the haulage arrived Dugbe, Ibadan, the corporation’s western zone headquarters on September 25 and was the third done by the corporation from the factory to different parts of the country.

He added that hauling would be undertaken weekly.

“I am confident that with this large haulage of cement, it will not only reduce the cost of cement but also reduce traffic jams and accidents on our roads,” the managing director said.

He explained that the freight was not only another landmark in revitalising the railway system, but was a great achievement coming after long years of planning. He also said the haulage would soon be extended to iron, petroleum products and other building materials.

Meanwhile, the NRC District Manager, Western zone, Mr Rasheed Gbadamosi, disclosed that the first phase of the haulage began on November 23, 2010, with weekly transportation of 600 tonnes of cement from Ewekoro to Ijoko.

“It was followed with the second phase of another weekly transportation of 150 tonnes of cement from Ewekoro to Agege and now the third phase from Ewekoro to Ibadan,” he said.

According to him, the phases will soon be extended to Osogbo, Ilorin and Kano.

Gbadamosi promised that by the first week of October, the haulage would be increased to 2,400 tonnes to meet the demand for cement in other parts of the country.
