Afren’s chairman Egbert Imomoh appointed SPE president

Afren’s chairman Egbert Imomoh will become president of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in 2013, it was revealed today.

Imomoh has been a member of the key international organisation for the oil and gas sector since 1973 and was a founding member in Nigeria.

The presidency is an honorary role and Imomoh will lead SPE’s 27-member international board of directors, which is the policy-making and governing body of the society.

SPE is a not-for-profit professional association which serves more than 97,000 members in 118 countries.

It provides technical knowledge related to exploration and production and offers events, publications and online resources.

Last week Afren confirmed that it is raising £113 million (US$184.5 million) to help fund its new acquisition in the Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq.

The oil firm, whose main assets are in Africa, unveiled a major US$588 million deal, which it describes as a ‘highly complementary extension’ of its existing portfolio.

In all, it is buying two assets –  a 60 percent stake in the Barda Rash field from Komet Group and, separately, from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) –  a 20 per cent stake in the Ain Sifni field, which is operated by Hunt Oil (which owns 60 percent, while the KRG retain a 20 percent stake).
