Indigenous Firm Identifies Oil in Mature Well

Oildata, a pioneer Nigerian oil and gas service company has deployed for the first time novel digital reservoir monitoring technology, which successfully identified zones of by-passed hydrocarbons in an old oil well for one of the major international oil companies.

According to a statement by the company, the Pulsed Reservoir Intelligent Saturation Monitor (PRIXM) as the tool is called, was deployed in a back – to- back comparison with older technologies offered by at least two other international service companies.

It acquired the information in one-third of the time normally required using the more traditional methods.

Oildata’s PRIXM tool was designed to withstand downhole pressures and temperatures up to 15,000 Pounds Per Square Inch (psi) and 300 Degrees Fahrenheit (°F) respectively.

Under these harsh conditions, the tool is able to detect the presence of oil, water and gas behind oil-well casing pipes in reservoirs where water salinities can be as low as 1500 Parts Per Million (ppm).

The tool also acquires such high resolution measurements at speeds up to 15 feet per minute, slashing the overall project execution times and operating costs for the oil company.

Oildata’s spokesman Mr. Kingsley Idedevbo noted that with the PRIXM’s 18 inch depth of investigation, operators can now better estimate reservoir depletion profiles, identify oil-water-gas contacts or zones with no hydrocarbons and any by-passed oil with more precision even    in gravel-pack completion wells or through oil well tubing sized as small as 2-3/8 inches.

He also remarked that following the breakthrough results achieved by the PRIXM, many operators have confirmed interest in deploying the service on their remote swamp and offshore oil fields where they can take advantage of the unique features of the tool.
