Police, PHCN Named as Most Corrupt Institutions

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) are perceived by majority of Nigerians as the most corrupt institutions in the country, the 2010 National poll that was jointly organised by NOI-Gallup has said.

Chief Methodologist, Gallup, United States of America (USA0, Dr. Bob Tortora disclosed this at a media briefing in Lagos Tuesday. He said  the result was the overwhelming view of respondents in the poll.

He said that 75 per cent of respondents from different parts of the country hold the view that,  “there is a lot of corruption in the NPF.”

Tortora explained: “PHCN is second, although the gap was not close as 58 per cent of respondents also believe that the institution has a lot of corruption. The findings were not surprising as the result of previous NOI survey have consistently found that the two institutions are the most corrupt in the estimation of Nigerians.

“Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) was third, as 48 per cent of Nigerians suggested that it is also corrupt. While 37 per cent voted the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) as a corrupt institution, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) got 35 per cent, the Federal Inland Revenue Service 34 per cent and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) 25 per cent.”

According to him, availability of power ranked most among the top issues Nigerians want the Federal Government to address in the next one year  as it attracted 19 per cent and was closely followed by job creation  which  got 12 per cent.

“I have conducted polls in 40 countries and no other country had said that they want electricity as the most important issue they want their government to address. This issue keeps coming up in our polls in Nigeria,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Atedo Peterside, who described the NOI poll as credible, said the survey would have a political significance in the country.
