FAAN Constructs Perimeter Fencing for Eight Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has embarked on the construction of perimeter and operational fences of eight airports in the country.
The managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Richard Aisuebeogun said that most of the constructions would be commissioned before the coming of ICAO audit in May. He explained that the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja was 80 per cent completed and that  work on operational fences was also ongoing, adding that the two will be commissioned in April.
He further stated that the fences in Port Harcourt Airport are 85 per cent completed , adding that already the Murtala Muhammed Airport(MMA),Lagos and Mallam Aminu Kano Airport, Kano  have block wall fences that prevent intruders from gaining access to the airport easily.

Apart from these, the FAAN MD stated that works were also ongoing in Enugu, Yola, Maiduguri, Ibadan and Akure airports, stressing that FAAN decided to embark on the perimeter fencing of both primary and secondary airports in a bid to spread its risk protection management level to cover the airport.

He said that after the completion of works on the eight airports, FAAN would re-direct its attention to other 14 airports under its control.

Aisuebeogun “I have said it over and over again, if you look historically from where we started, we had airports without perimeter fencing many years ago, but today we have at least ongoing eight airports that we are constructing perimeter fences and it is a significant improvement from where we were five years ago.
“As I speak today, the perimeter fencing of Abuja is 80 per cent completed and by middle of April, the perimeter fencing would be officially commissioned. Operational fencing of the airport is also ongoing and by the middle of April, it will be officially commissioned. That is one airport.

He  said “Two, as we speak today, the perimeter fencing of Port Harcourt airport is about 85 per cent completed and the operational fencing of the same airport is concurrently being done as we speak. That is in addition to Lagos and Kano International Airports that already have block wall perimeter fencing,” he said.

It would be recalled that recently, the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren disclosed that ICAO would visit the nation’s airports in May for audit assessment.

Demuren stated that the ICAO team, which earlier visited the country in 2006, was coming in 2011 to audit all the aspects of the Nigerian aviation industry including the equipment at the airports. The four airports to be audited by ICAO are the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport (NAA), Abuja, Port Harcourt Airport (PHA), Port Harcourt and Aminu Kano Airport (AKA), Kano.

He said the latest audit also involves the certification of the Nigerian airports with the certificates duly signed by the Director General of NCAA and revealed that said so far, no airport had been certified by the regulatory body, which he emphasised must be done before the visit of ICAO team in May.
