IGI boosts NUGA with N30m

INDUSTRIAL And General Insurance (IGI) Plc, the nation’s sports-friendly insurance company, in furtherance of its sponsorship of sports in Nigeria and commitment to youth development, is sponsoring the 2011 National Universities Games (NUGA) with a package worth N30 million.

The on-going games, which is being hosted by the University of Benin will witness participation by all universities in the country, with athletes competing for laurels in various sports, notably football, athletics, swimming, handball and basketball, among others. IGI is the ‘official insurer’ of the Games.

IGI’s sponsorship package includes N24 million group Personal accident insurance cover of all NUGA participants (athletes and officials), N1 million cash donation to the host, University of Benin, and the kitting of the host’s contingent in select sports, namely Athletics, Football, Handball, Swimming, Hockey, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Lawn Tennis.

Executive Vice Chairman of IGI, Mr. Remi Olowude said: “IGI has always provided moral and financial aid to sportsmen and women in Nigeria, and we believe that we should make our modest contribution to raising the standard of performance in sports at the tertiary level of education in Nigeria through NUGA, a sporting competition that has produced great sports personalities for Nigeria over the years.”

The N1 million cash donation to UNIBEN and the policy documents of the N24 million worth insurance cover of all the 2011 NUGA participants were recently handed over to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) in Benin. Kits for the UNIBEN contingent were also handed over to the university.

“We believe that our involvement in the games will help to rekindle the true spirit of sportsmanship and foster national unity through interaction among students of the country’s tertiary institutions,” Olowude stated.

IGI was the ‘official insurer’ of the last NUGA Games (NUGA 2009) hosted by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2009. IGI is also the ‘official insurer’ of all the Nigerian national football teams and the Nigeria Premier League.
