Auditing, key to good public governance — Lagos HoS

The Head of Service, Lagos State, Mrs. Olabowale Ademola, has said auditing represents the cornerstone of good public governance.

She noted that auditors help public sector organisations to achieve accountability and integrity, improve operations and instill confidence among citizens and stakeholders by strengthening governance responsibility and oversight and foresight.

Ademola, who stated this at the 6th Annual Auditor’s Retreat, where she spoke on the theme, “Corruption, Insecurity and Economic Development: The Role of Audit,’ commended auditors in the employ of the state civil service for proper auditing of the accounts of the State government.

She stressed that the time had come for auditors in the state public service to expand their horizon and think radically in the discharge of their duties.

On her part, the Lagos State Auditor-General, Mrs. Helen Deile, stressed the need for effective synergy between the Office of the State Auditor General and the House of Assembly Public Accounts Committee, if the issue of corruption must be addressed.

According to her, it is so sad that the society has internalised corruption to the extent that maintaining integrity becomes outcast in the same society because it is being celebrated.

She, therefore, enjoined all auditors, being major stakeholders in the fight against corruption, to look inward and review their activities, processes and reporting and venture into other areas of auditing that would make them more accountable to people.
