ANAN tasks FG on 2014 budget implementation

The President of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Alhaji Sakirudeen Labode has urged the federal government to expedite action on the implementation of the 2014 budget.

Labode made the plea in a statement yesterday while speaking on deliberations at the third session of the mandatory continuing professional development (MCPD) programme of ANAN held in Kano recently.

He noted that quick implementation of the budget would improve the economy and speed up development projects across the country.

The ANAN president urged officers of the association to participate actively in the monitoring of the implementation of budgets of their respective states.

According to Labode, with that, leakages, wastes and corruption would be checked and fiscal responsibility would be achieved.

Labode said as certified national accountants, it was the collective duty of members to be the association’s ambassadors by building a fraudulent and corruption-free society aided by ethical conduct and value-added services.
The ANAN president said the advantages of attending the MCPD include technological advancement and innovations in the profession which required employees to have new or improved skills.

“To fulfill certain working requirements that may be needed under current working conditions; and benchmarking with their professional colleagues. The MCPD programme is a continuous retraining programme for members of the association aimed at improving their service delivery to their employers and work. It is also a key requirement of IFAC,” Labode said.

The ANAN president urged members to fulfill their obligations to the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria; the Special Control Unit for Anti-Money Laundering; as well as the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

The accountant also urged members to adhere to corporate governance in the discharge of their duties to their employers so that their employers would have value for their money.

Labode said the council of ANAN “is working assiduously towards full membership of IFAC.

To this end, we have submitted to IFAC our application for full membership.
“It is our expectation that our application will be considered favourably by the end of the year,’’ he said.

Labode also said that ANAN had finalised arrangements with a university and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland for Leadership training for members.

“It is similar to what we presently have with the University of  Pittsburgh, USA. The programme will be test run by the EXCO in June, 2014. The Ireland programme may replace that of Pittsburgh if found to be satisfactory. Members will be adequately informed on the modalities,’’ the accountant said.

He said the association had introduced e-MCPD for members to compliment the traditional face to face MCPD, adding that the e-MCPD would cover areas which the association might not be able to cover adequately during the traditional MCPD.
