Enugu Government revokes water contract for alleged incompetence

Governor ChimeThe Enugu State Government has terminated the multi million Naira contract of the state urban water project for alleged incompetence.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr Michael Nwachukwu, announced this in Enugu on Friday when he received the House of Assembly Committee on Water.

Nwachukwu said that the contractor, who was laying new water pipes in the state, had continued to frustrate government’s efforts in providing water for residents.

According to him, the contractor has no specific design or programme for the project.

“All he has been doing in the past four years was to lay pipelines without providing water for the people. So, the government decided to terminate the contract for incompetence,’’ he said.

Nwachukwu said the ministry would engage competent contractors to undertake the project, and urged the people to be patient because the problem would soon be addressed.

He announced that the World Bank had commenced repairs on the two major sources of water in Ajalli and Oji River to meet the water needs of the people.

Nwachukwu said that the ministry had commenced plans to provide water for Nsukka, Oji River and their environs.

Earlier, the Chairman of the committee on water, Mr Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, urged the ministry to do everything possible to provide water for the people.

Ezeugwu said that a lot of time had been spent laying the pipes without water to show for it.

The members of the committee, include Chief Donatus Uzogbado, Okechukwu Nwoke and Mrs Nkechi Omeje, urged the commissioner not to relent in his efforts to provide water for the people.
