THE Rivers State Government is to develop  an alternative economy to oil. Chairman of Integrated Medical Industries, IMI, and Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker, who disclosed this during the first test run of the integrated medical industries power plant, said the government was already addressing the challenge of youth unemployment.

Meantime, the state government said it had saved N1.4 billion  from the ongoing salary verification exercise in the state public service.

Head of Service, Mr Samuel LongJohn, when the state chapter of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA paid him a courtesy visit at his office, said the ongoing salary verification exercise had nothing to do with salary cut, as it was to ensure that staff of the state government were paid their appropriate salaries, adding that it would also help guide against irregularities in payment.

He said the verification exercise had helped the state government save N1.4 billion from payment irregularities, noting that there were situations, where some persons were earning far above their entitlement. The irregularity he said was discovered through the ongoing staff verification exercise.

Continuing, Dr. Parker said “Oil has been good to Nigeria and the Rivers people but Governor Chibuike Amaechi believes that the best way to sustain the development in Rivers State is to develop an economy that is independent of oil. That is why the Rivers State Government has invested heavily in manufacturing, farming, education, health, and energy.

“We are already seeing the results as youths unemployment is reducing,” he said.
