Telcos assures subscribers on feasibility of number portability

Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications subscribers who are eager in relation to the implementation of the much anticipated number portability project, have been assured that they would soon begin to enjoy the service, despite the postponement of the initial date of implementation.

Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators in Nigeria (ALTON) Mr Gbenga Adebayo expressed this in an interview . He allayed the fears that the project may not be implemented as planned early this year, stating that the GSM service providers were working tirelessly to achieve that.

He said “Yes we are ready to commence number portability in the next two months, our networks are ready, and all we need do is to do the test run to ascertain the state of readiness of the network, and once that is confirmed, then we are ready for roll-out.”

There had been growing perceptions last year by the subscribers, that the Telcos were slow in their pace of implementing the project, while the regulatory body the Nigerian Communication Commission were viewed as not being assertive in driving it.

Mr Adebayo claimed that “there are legal issues, commercial issues and technical issues that must be addressed, and all these are currently being looked into to enable the smooth implementation of the process.”

He also stressed that as soon as the MNP is fully implemented, there will be no relenting of efforts by the service providers in making the service efficient, dynamic and progressive for the populace.

It is expected that the NCC, Telcos, and ALTON will work together tirelessly, to put in place necessary infrastructure for the service. This service will serve as a basis for Telcos to take their job of service delivery to another level.

    We are waiting…March is not far. NCC should adopt a more proactive regulatory style. The regulatory body has not been impressive in dealing with telcos. Hope this year subscribers will experience better service delivery at very reasonable cost. telcos have made so much money form the Nigerian market and gone scot free with a lot of dubious promos.
