D-8 Summit Harps on Peace and Prosperity

The G-8 equivalent summit for key developing nations termed the D-8 Summit in Islamabad, Pakistan. is currently underway Leaders of the member states have already arrived the capital for the strategic forum.

The Leaders of the member states namely President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Yassin representing Malaysian Premier Mr Najib, President Mohammed Morsi of Egypt, President Susilo Yudhono of Indonesia, Prime Minister Reccip Erdogan of Turkey,  Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President  Mahmoud Ahmanidejad of  Iran, and host Pakistani  Prime Minister Raja Ashraf will be in attendance.

The D-8 Summit group which was established in 1997, has as its main goal and objective galvanizing and mobilizing member developing states to coordinate and take proactive steps in leading key global economic revolutions that will launch them into major players in the International economy.

Part  of the agendas for the summit will be the adoption of the D-8 charter, D-8 global vision for the next two decades  and the Islamabad declaration coupled with the appointment of a new Secretary General.

Also a four-day  trade exhibition designed to foster and build strategic partnerships amongst member states which commenced on Monday will close on Thursday.

Aside from the trade exhibition there will be a business forum for economic leaders to discuss and analyze the trend of the global and economy and the situation for the developing member states.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar quoted from Dawn  news stated that ‘Pakistani Image will improve through this summit at the regional and international levels’.

This is crucial as the Nation has been under pressure since the U.S seals launched a secret operation in 2011 to kill Osama Bin Laden in its territory and also this year the attempted assassination of Teenage Girl,Malalal Yousafzai by the Talibans.

The Conference will forge ahead  with three framework agreements namely;A Preferential Trade agreement that seeks to reduce tariffs, A Visa Simplification agreement for businessmen of member States, and An Exchange of Information  agreement on Customs Issues.

Theme of the Conference is a ‘Democratic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity’ and will be inaugurated by the Pakistani President and Ceremonial Head of State Asif Ali Zardari.
