Nations warned on need for potable water, sanitation
As Nigeria joined the world to celebrate the 2011 World Water Day, a warning has been issued as to the need for governments to double efforts to provide better water and sanitation for cities, especially the urban poor.
The celebration, marked in Cape Town, South Africa, drew 1,000 delegates from around the world, to discuss this year’s theme: Water and Urbanisation.”
Delegates were told that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for water and sanitation, were among those in which people lagged the most, and that the problem is most evident in cities.
This year’s World Water Day focussed on “Water for Cities: Responding to the urban challenge.”
Furthermore, half of the world’s population now lives in cities, and in little the non distant future that figure is expected to reach two-thirds.
Also addressing the gathering, the Prince of Orange (Netherlands), His Royal Highness, Willem-Alexander urged nations, saying, “Let’s make World Water Day here in Cape Town a wake-up call to the world.”
