Emefiele, Fashola task leaders on accountability

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele and Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, have advised those at various leadership positions in the country to be transparent and accountable in their subjects.

They gave the advice at a conference organised by the Society for Corporate Governance of Nigeria (SSGN) in Lagos, themed, “Leadership and Governance in the Public Sector”.

Emefiele, who was the keynote speaker at the conference, noted that leadership and governance in the public sector are relevant to the CBN’s efforts to maintain price stability to drive economic growth. The CBN governor, who was represented at the event by the Director, Banking and Payment System, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun, also pointed out that such growth would not only be sustainable, but could lead to the creation of jobs.

He added: “It provides an opportunity to access current effects to enthrone good leadership in the public sector and in developing strong institutions that would provide support to leaders, so that they are better able to fulfill the mandate of organisations they preside over.”

He maintained that leadership and governance are mutually re-enforcing and key in improving quality, output of the public sector agencies, adding that,  these are principles, which if applied could help to enhance the quality of leadership and governance in the public  sector in Nigeria.

Furthermore, he noted that good governance structures help in preventing the emergence of bad leadership.
“Good leadership can help in developing better governance structures that will ultimately work to help sustainability over time in the achievement of the agency’s goals and objectives,” Emefiele added.

Highlighting the principles of good governance and leadership in the public sector, the CBN governor instructed public officers to equally ensure that there is robust interaction with stakeholders in the country.
He posited that the public sector must at all times be guided by the principle enshrined in the law to provide good governance.

“Public institutions cannot evade public scrutiny, in fact accountability and transparency is the premise for building trust and confidence in leadership. We must acquaint ourselves by record and conduct in the court of public scrutiny,” he stressed.

In his presentation, Fashola noted that leadership decides everything.

He said: “There is a domino-like effect from the public to the private sector and vice-versa depending on the leadership that exists. The leadership question is a question of values such as trust, merit, integrity, strength, justice.

“Bad leaders are unlikely to emerge where good values reigns.  When values are united and shared, methods and ideas would be easy to hold, it reflects the choice of leadership that we have,” the governor said.

He further stressed the need for private and public sector operators to portray good values in other to produce good leaders.

“The answer to the leadership and governance whether in the public or private sector rests with all of us,” Fashola added.
